A couple of weeks ago I spent the weekend with a family and we decided to hit a few yard sales. At one such yard sale there were worth while books for sale, my companions and I eagerly hunted for books we would be interested in and it was then I came across Clay's Quilt by Silas House...a book written by my current Advanced Creative Writing teacher. It was a an odd feeling to see my teacher's book at a yard sale costing no more than a couple of bucks. I don't know what kind of writer he is since I have not read any of his books, but I do know that he is a great teacher and I have and will learn much from him. It was an odd feeling seeing his book and it was like a prophecy foretelling the fate of all written works...to end up as a reject and costing far less than was originally intended. Publication was achieved, but the result was a $2 book at someone's yard sale.
Here some food for thought...
If your (or mine) goal is to write something with the end result of it being published then it will come as a nasty shock if someday you come across your own rejected book at a yard sale and see the end result of publication. However, if you (or I) write for sanity sake, for sake of writing, by some inward push that cannot be ignored then if you came across your book costing no more than dime then you'll be able to smile knowingly and continue to write without feeling much of a pang because something besides pride compels you to write.
This is a lesson I'm trying to learn.
