All that Jazz...

College is about learning and my father always taught me to make schooling my own. A lesson I will never forget and it is a lesson I hope I have lived out through my college career. From taking an Intro. Theatre class in my junior college days to a jazz dance class today; I am determined to learn what I can while I have the opportunity. Will I ever be an actor? Doubt it. But I now can appreciate what all goes into a Theatre production and what kind of people live their life for the Theatre. It has enhanced my enjoyment in Theatre and I will continue to support that art.

I have no aspirations to become a great jazz dancer...just saying that is almost laughable. BUT...today I finally got it...I stared ahead to the other side of the dance floor and felt the beat of the drums in my body. I felt the rhythm...I felt it! Immediately I was dancing the sequence to the beat...right on cue. No, I will never be a great dancer, but nothing will take away that glimpse I had into what it means to be a dancer. I am so grateful for such an opportunity.

Jazz is such an interesting form of dance and I will explore it more since I will be
presenting on it to my World Dance class and writing a research paper on it. I came to my Jazz class with very little understanding of the dance; just vague images of the 20s Flapper and the musical Chicago. But my appreciation has surely increased ten fold. There is so much emotion in Jazz and I love trying to feel that emotion through the music to my movements and even to my facial expressions. I love that it has some sensuality in it (I don't have a problem with this, but I understand that some do) and how that it is almost like playing a character...you become someone else even if it's just a short time. I've only been at it for 4 weeks and I cannot wait to see how far I will go come this May when all is said and done.
